Hallway Interior Design: Top 5 Tips:
The hallway is often the first space people see when they enter your home. First impressions count, so make it memorable! Follow CCID’s top 5 tips when designing and renovating your hallway.
1) Focal Point - Create a focal point:
It is important to create a focal point in your hallway. Consider adding a large piece of artwork or a collection of artwork down the length of the hallway to draw the eye. Oversized mirrors (possibly positioned above a console table or at the end of the hallway) can also act as a focal point. A bold wallpaper or paint colour can also help create a focal point.
2) Lighting - Layer lighting:
Lighting (both natural and artificial) is incredibly important for any space, especially hallways, which can often be narrow. Consider installing ceiling lights to brighten the walkway and provide overall illumination; as well as adding accent lighting, such as wall lights to highlight artwork and architectural details. Under-cabinet lighting can help illuminate display pieces.
3) Texture & Colour - Incorprate texture & colour:
Bring visual interest into your hallway with different textures and colours. Add a coloured or patterned area or runner rug to add interest to a monotonous floor. Baskets, shelving, artwork and framed photos can help break up expanses of blank space. Painting one wall or wall panelling in a different, complementary colour (to the walls) can add a pleasing contrast.
4) Storage - Maximise storage space:
Hallways often turn into clutter magnets with shoes, bags, coats and miscellaneous items lying around. Get organised with a bench or cabinet for concealing items away. Install hooks in a hallway cupboard for hanging coats and storing bags neatly. Open shelving can display decorative objects, such as photographs and flowers, creating visual interest.
5) Go Green - Add greenery:
Greenery instantly brightens up any area. Potted plants, fresh flowers and leafy accent pieces make a hallway feel welcoming. Shelves are ideal for displaying smaller plants and succulents. Tall, leafy plants in the corners of the hallway can help soften the space and architecture. If you want to go bold, consider investing in a green living wall.
By focusing on these interior design tips, you can create a hallway with a wow factor. Invest time planning the details and your hallway will feel warm and welcoming.
