Bathroom Interior Design: Top 5 Tips:

The bathroom is one of the most private and personal spaces in a home, so it's important to create a space that suits your needs and style. Creating a beautiful and functional bathroom requires careful planning and thoughtful design. Follow CCID’s top 5 tips when designing and renovating your bathroom.

1) Functionality: Focus on functionality: It is essential that a bathroom is functional. Focus on the layout and floor plan first. Consider how you want to use the space and what you need in your bathroom. Make sure there is enough room to move around comfortably. If your bathroom is small, consider space saving solutions. For example, use wall-mounted taps and toilets, plus consider opting for a space-saving corner shower. If you have a large bathroom, design distinct areas and divide the bathroom into different (dry and wet) zones. Get creative with the basin and vanity space. Storage is key in any bathroom. Maximise storage in your bathroom with cabinets, drawers, shelves and baskets. Built-in or freestanding storage options allow you to customise storage according to your needs.

2) Atmosphere: Create a sanctuary: It is increasingly popular to create a bathroom with a spa-like ambiance for people to relax in. To create a sanctuary environment, opt for a colour palette with calming colours, such as blue, green or neutral tones. Incorporate natural textures with the use of stone, wood or woven accents. Add comfy seating, greenery and accent lighting. Use high-end luxury fixtures, such as rainfall shower heads, as well as elevated basin and bath tub areas.

3) Lighting: Layer the lighting: Lighting is absolutely key in bathrooms and layering lighting creates warmth and dimension. Create visual interest by using a mix of general ambient lighting (such as spot lights and pendant lights), task lighting (such as lights to illuminate basins and mirrors) and accent lighting (such as uplights and wall lights). It is important to ensure the bathroom lights have the relevant IP rating to protect lights from water.

4) Eco-Friendly Features: Go Green: Create a sustainable bathroom sanctuary. Consider the use of low-flow sink and showers. Choose sustainable materials, such as bamboo floors, organic cotton towels and natural cleaners. Install automatic or biodynamic lighting that is dimmable. Go high-tech with water temperature controls, sensor taps and auto-flush toilets.

5) Sourcing: Source products that complement your design style and reflect your personality: Coordinate cohesive fixtures and fittings, such as plumbing fixtures, hardware and tiles to suit your design style and vision. For visual interest, source personal items and accessories, such as artwork, towels, plants and decor. These items are a great way to add pops of colour and texture. The accessories you select will make all the difference.

By focusing on these interior design tips, you can create a bathroom retreat that is tailored to you. Invest time planning the details and your bathroom will become a space that you enjoy using every day.
